One of the consultants shall be required to act as ‘lead consultant’ for the team. The scope of this project is not yet bounded, and is expected to continue to develop through the early RIBA stages. The current buildings occupied by the Scottish Oceans Institute (formerly known as the Gatty Marine Laboratory and the Sea Mammal Research Unit) total approximately 4,200 m².
There are 3 core buildings that constitute the complex; these range in age from 100 years to around 15 years old, These buildings will be subject to refurbishment. The extent of refurbishment to existing buildings will be determined by the extent to which they are re-roled.
The adjacent site is currently occupied by the University’s Estates facility. It is anticipated that once accommodation for this unit is provided elsewhere, these buildings will be demolished as part of this project. The size of the new build extension required is still in the process of being scoped. It is imperative that the Institute remains operational during the works.
As decant space will be severely limited, design teams should consider the phasing of works as a critical aspect of the project. Appointments will be on the NEC3 Professional Services Contract.
Excluding VAT the project value is between £18,000,000 and £30,000,000.
