Russia opens contest for kindergartens in extreme climates

  • Comment

The Russian Ministry of Education and Science has launched an open international competition for a series of new kindergartens in the country’s most inhospitable regions

The contest invites architects, designers and students to consider how new construction technologies can deliver modern teaching environments in the extreme climatic conditions of Russia’s far east and far north.

Temperatures in Russia’s Sakha Republic – whose government is also supporting the competition – can range between 38 °C in the summer to −47 °C in winter.

Proposals should cover both the design and functionality of the pre-school, considering architectural look, furniture, toys and surrounding play areas.

Shortlisted schemes will feature on the Ministry of Education and Science website and the winning designs will influence new standard templates for nursery school design in Russia.

The deadline for responses is 21 August.
