Masterplanning contest launched for Cairo’s Maspero Triangle

  • Comment

The Egyptian government has opened an international masterplanning contest to regenerate the Maspero Triangle district in west central Cairo

The competition – backed by Egypt’s Ministry of State for Urban Renewal and Informal Settlements and the Cairo Governorate – will select a design team to overhaul the 31 hectare historic slum area.

According to the competition brief: ‘The goal of this design competition is to inspire a design that will be an exemplary mixed-use urban community, preserves heritage, protects the environment and does not lead to loss of local residents diversity due to gentrification.’

Bordering the River Nile and Egypt’s revolutionary epicentre Tahrir Square, the triangle-shaped plot of land is home to around 14,000 residents.

Earlier redevelopment proposals were met with opposition by local residents fearing forced evicted of their families after generations of living in the area.

In December last year however the country’s minister of urban development, Laila Iskander promised there would be no forced evictions under the project.

Named after French Egyptologist Gaston Maspero, the neighbourhood features a 240 metre-long river frontage and the landmark headquarters of the Egyptian Radio and Television Union.

Open to architects and urban planners only, the contest will be judged by representatives of the Egyptian government, the International Union of Architects and other professionals.
