An international design competition has opened for a new waterfront park in Busan, South Korea
The high-profile competition is part of the 153-hectare Busan North Port regeneration in the centre of South Korea’s second largest city.
The proposed 27 hectare urban park is one of several transport, tourism and commercial developments planned to transform the former dockland site by 2020.
Snøhetta won a design contest for Busan North Port’s new opera house in 2012. Construction of new international cruise and passenger ferry terminals started on the site the same year.
The waterfront plot for the new park is expected to include an underground car park, embankments and five pedestrian bridges.
The deadline for online registration is 6pm local time on 25 April.
Companies wishing to participate in the two-stage contest must first complete a ‘request for qualification’ form in Korean by 10 June.
Applicants must outline their vision for the site and include three A3 boards detailing their concept, strategy, and framework for the project.
A shortlist of seven domestic and international teams will be announced on 16 June. The finalist teams will receive £17,000 each to compete in the competition’s second stage.
The top prize winner – set to be announced in October – will receive £1.4 million to complete the masterplan.
Six honourable mentions worth £1,800 each will also be awarded.
