The winning team will draw up a ‘route map’ to encourage investment and transform the area into a ‘vibrant, safe, and desirable place to live’.

According to the contract notice: ‘Working closely with the association, the successful consultant will be expected to develop high quality architectural and design solutions for the area that reflect the views of stakeholders and the local community to ensure that proposals meet the objectives of a successful and sustainable development plan for the area.’

Proposals will be expected to overcome ‘key strategic challenges’ and deliver ‘innovative, affordable architectural and design solutions for the site.’ A phased delivery strategy will also be required.

Lerwick – which means ‘bay of clay’ in Old Norse is the main port for the Shetland Islands and currently has a population of around 7,500.
