Ideas contest to replace San Francisco highway opens

[Submissions to be made before 31 July] The AIA in San Francisco has launched an ideas contest to imagine the future of spaces beneath Highway 280 following its possible demolition

Open to architects, artists, planners and designers, the contest boasts a £6,500 prize fund with no competition entry fee.

Earlier this year, the city’s mayor Ed Lee announced he would investigate the potential for demolishing the busy road north of 16th Street in San Francisco.

Proposals which ‘explore any aspect of the transformative opportunities’ resulting from the major road’s demolition may be submitted regardless of scale or budget.

Suggested ideas include new buildings, public art, landscaping and design interventions.

The site is divided into six ‘pockets’ running the length of the highway with entrants invited to propose schemes for one or all of the areas.

Entries should be completed online by 31 July. The winning submissions will be announced in the ‘Architecture and the City Festival’ on 20 September.
