Gloucester uni seeks student halls architect

  • Comment

The University of Gloucestershire is recruiting a design team for a new £8.3 million student accommodation scheme

Planned to complete in 2018, the project will deliver lodgings for 200 students on the university’s Oxstalls Campus in Gloucester which is undergoing a multi-million expansion.

The new student halls will be constructed on Debenham’s Field – currently a cricket green – which neighbours nearby residential streets.

Each unit is expected to include an en-suite bathroom and there may be a shared kitchen-living room for each six to ten bedsits or a central cafeteria.

The scheme could also include a laundry, cleaners’ store, common room, IT suite, study space and music practice room.

The winning team will explore a range of different configurations and layout options for the building which may also be rented out for conferences during the summer.

According to the brief: ‘Options should consider staffing and operational costs, anticipated behaviour, requirements for direct University management, supervision and pastoral management, etc, with a view to developing efficient layouts and reducing running and operational costs wherever possible.’

The document continues: ‘Student accommodation forms an important part of student decisions regarding where to study, and the design of the proposed residential accommodation should be attractive to a wide remit of individuals and benchmarked against similar facilities.’

Gloucester City Council approved an outline planning application for the new Longlevens campus by West Wady ADP in March.

Austin Smith Lord has been chosen for the first phase – which was announced in September – featuring a combined 6,000m² business school and ‘growth hub’.

New sports facilities, all-weather pitches, student residences, car parking and landscaping will also be delivered as part of the redevelopment.

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios completed a £10 million overhaul of the campus – originally designed by S E Urwin – 13 years ago.

Up to six teams will be shortlisted for the latest £600,000 contract.

The deadline for applications is 12 noon on 20 June.
