Design contest launched for Czech primary school

  • Comment

An international design competition has been launched for a new primary school in Chýně, Czech Republic

Organised by Centre for Central European Architecture, the contest seeks ideas for a school which will also serve as a ‘magnet for communal life’ in the rapidly expanding Prague suburb.

According to the brief: ‘In Chýně, the residents are well aware that a new school is a long-term investment particularly for the future life of the town as a whole.’

The brief continued: ‘They would like to use the architectural competition to find a suitable design meeting their sense of the environment where their children will be educated, but equally a social centre for all local residents to meet.’

The population of Chýně – which is located on the outskirts of the capital city – has grown fourfold in the past decade following a surge of new housing.

The new school will host students from 1st to 9th grade and will also include ‘social, cultural, sporting and educational’ for the entire community.

Local mayor Anna Chvojková said: ‘We would like to offer our children not only attractive spaces, but also modern teaching elements.’

She continued: ‘Included in the school are a great many clubs and after-school activities, so we don’t have to drive our children everywhere. I’m looking forward to when we can, for example, be waiting for their activities to end and find facilities for parents as well in the school.’

The first prize winner will receive around £8,000. A second place prize worth around £4,000 and third place prize of approximately £2,000 are also available.

The deadline for applications is 6pm local time on 29 April.
