An open international competition has been launched for a new passenger terminal at the Port of Mageallan in Punta Arenas, Chile

Backed by Empresa Portuaria Austral – the contest seeks proposals for a new 3,310m² passenger terminal and tourist district overlooking the Strait of Mageallan.

The project is part of an ongoing regeneration of the city’s dock area (pictured) which is currently being extended so it can host larger cruise liners.

According to the brief: ‘The city of Punta Arenas has experienced significant and sustained growth in recent decades driven by international tourism. This new dynamic has offered significant opportunities for the local economy and has increasingly demanded more and better services.

‘The redevelopment of the harbour will provide multiple opportunities to improve the waterfront´s relationship to the city along with its public spaces and its urban fabric. The transformation of this port area into a new passenger terminal will also provide an opportunity to create a new urban services centre for Punta Arenas.’

The capital of Chile’s southernmost ‘Magallanes and Antartica Chilena’ region – historic Punta Arenas was founded in 1848 as a penal colony and later became an important port and centre for sheep farming and gold prospecting.

The city’s harbour and port terminal served as a base for several scientific missions of discovery in Antarctica. Proposals are encouraged to pay tribute to Ferdinand Magellan’s circumnavigation of the globe which will be focus of 500th anniversary celebrations in 2020.

Participating teams must feature at least one member who is a current member of the Chilean Institute of Architects. Competition judges include the chief executive of Empresa Portuaria Austral, the mayor of Punta Arenas and Jorge Moscato of Buenos Aires-based practice Moscato Schere Todo Terreno.

The winning team will receive around £30,000 and the design commission. A second place prize of approximately £18,000; third place prize of £12,000 and three honourable mentions worth around £1,200 each will also be awarded.

The registration deadline is 12noon local time on 28 November and submissions must be completed by 6pm on 11 January.
