Westminster Cathedral, Queen’s University and the best losers: The inside track on this week’s competitions
The plaza in front of Westminster Cathedral (pictured) has previously been used as a market, a maze and even a bull-baiting pen. Now Westminster Council is looking for designers and architects to revamp it. The chosen team will also win the nearby Wilcox Place job and expressions of interest are due by 1 February.
Queen’s University Belfast needs an architect for its proposed Centre for Vision and Vascular Science. Total costs – including enabling works but excluding VAT and fees – will be £13 million. Funding hasn’t yet been secured for this two-phase job and the university reserves the right not to proceed beyond RIBA Stage C, Outline Proposals. The deadline for accessing pre-qualification documents is 10 February.
And finally, US website architizer.com has launched Competition Competition 2010 – a chance to cash in on the hard work you put into ‘the ones that got away’. Eligibility is pretty straightforward: if you competed in any competition in 2009 and didn’t win, you’re in. Upload three images and a text description by 15 February to see if you have more luck this time.
