York St John University is recruiting an architect for a new £15 million arts complex on its main city-centre campus

The design team chosen for the £1.8 million contract, due to be announced in December, will draw up plans for a new ‘memorable and distinctive’ landmark within the prominent Lord Mayor’s Walk site.

The project, planned to complete in 2020, will create a new flexible home for the growing university’s schools of art, design and computer science, and performance and media production. Four shortlisted teams will receive £4,000 each to participate in a design contest following an initial pre-qualification round.

According to the brief: ‘In the context of rapid overall growth in student numbers on campus, the continued popularity of schools and subjects that require specialist space and the physical limitations across the rest of the estate, YSJU is seeking to build a new “Creative Centre” at its city centre Lord Mayor’s Walk campus.

‘We anticipate that the design team for this project will include an architect (including landscape architect), a cost consultant, a services engineer and a structural engineer, as well as a number of other service providers.’

Formerly a further education college, York St John became a university eleven years ago and now hosts nine academic schools and 100 degree course options.

Around £110 million has been invested in the university’s estate over the past decade, delivering the £15.5 million De Grey Court (pictured) by Rivington Street Studio, a library, student accommodation, laboratories, a sports park and a new £1.5 million students’ union by Watson Batty Architects.

The latest project will deliver a new creative centre within the Lord Mayor’s Walk campus featuring ‘well-detailed, environmentally sustainable, accessible and robust spaces’. Planned facilities include new learning and collaboration spaces, workshops, studios, labs and a large multi-use performance venue.

Interested teams must demonstrate an average annual turnover of at least £4.68 million. Public liability insurance of £2 million, employer’s liability insurance of £5 million and professional indemnity insurance worth £10 million will also be required.

The deadline for applications is 4pm on 19 September.
