The University Of Edinburgh is recruiting a design team for a £20 million redevelopment of its Grade A-listed main library

The winner of the £2 million contract will draw up plans to reconfigure and extend the George Square landmark, which was completed by Basil Spence’s practice Spence, Glover & Ferguson in 1965.

The project is part of the university’s 2017-27 estate regeneration masterplan, and comes just four years after Lewis & Hickey carried out a £36.6 million overhaul of the 28,000m² complex.

According to the brief: ‘The project aims to create an additional 2,000 study and learning spaces, improve access to research collections and create spaces for digital scholarship programmes along with making new maker spaces.

‘The project will involve a series of new-build extensions and internal reconfigurations while the library is kept operational. The ambition of the project is to ensure that students and staff work and interact in an optimal facility.’

The eight-storey main library, on the south-west corner of George Square, holds around 3.6 million volumes and close to 19,000 periodicals. It was originally designed to hold around 6,000 students and researchers, buthas been reconfigured several times since first opening.

The latest phased project, planned to complete in 2022, aims to upgrade the building’s infrastructure and create a mix of new study, learning and library spaces. Participating teams will feature an architect, mechanical and electrical engineer, and civil and structural engineer.

Six shortlisted teams will be selected following a prequalification round and invited to tender and attend interviews.

A minimum average annual turnover of £2 million is required along with £10 million of employers liability insurance, £10 million of public liability insurance and £5 million of professional indemnity insurance.

Teams must also submit details of three similar schemes worth around £15 million and completed in the last three years.

The deadline for applications is noon, 22 August.
