The Manchester College (TMC) is recruiting architects to deliver a major new 27,500m² city centre campus and upgrade its existing Openshaw campus
The contract is divided into two lots worth £2 million and £600,000 respectively, covering the creation of a landmark education complex on a yet-to-be-confirmed site in Manchester city centre and a major reconfiguration of the suburban Openshaw campus.
The two projects, planned to complete in 2021, are part of the college’s ambitious strategy to reduce its overall estate from 103,000m² to around 60,000m² and consolidate all its activities on five key sites instead of the current 14.
According to the brief: ‘In order to progress a new campus in Manchester City Centre, the group requires the services of an experienced architect/lead designer. The service will be by way of a direct appointment to the LTE Group via a bespoke letter of appointment.
‘The project is to consist of a full design service which will likely comprise the design and delivery of a new campus building and the design and delivery of education and sports facilities at an existing campus, including site clearance and co-ordination of remodelling/refurbishment of existing buildings.’
The Manchester College was founded in 1955 and is now the UK’s largest further education college, with more than 1,700 employees and 23,000 students. Courses on offer cover A-Level up to bachelors and masters degrees. The college also provides education to offenders in 42 prisons throughout England and in two probation areas.
The latest projects are part of a regeneration masterplan drawn up by Davenport Architects.
The first phased project will deliver a new flagship 27,500m² city-centre campus on a 0.8 to 1.2ha site which has yet to be finalised. The ‘fresh, innovative, sustainable and functional’ complex will focus on business, professional, digital and creative skills.
The second project will meanwhile upgrade the Openshaw campus by removing outdated buildings and improving the site’s relationship with a nearby arterial road. New sports facilities will also see the complex transformed into a ‘centre of excellence’ for health and wellbeing.
The deadline for applications is 5pm on 28 February.
