Shropshire & Wrekin Fire and Rescue Authority is seeking a design team for a major £12 million overhaul of Telford Central Fire Station
The winner of the estimated £500,000 contract will upgrade the Stafford Park complex and create a new training centre for both the fire service and West Mercia Police along with a 24hr resilient control room for handling emergency calls and coordinating incident responses.
The project, planned to complete in 2021, will provide a new facility for two daytime pumping appliances and crews and one overnight pumping appliance and crew along with additional accommodation for various other specialist fire-fighting appliances. A feasibility study has already been completed by Telford and Wrekin Council.
According to the brief: ‘Shropshire and Wrekin Fire Authority are planning to invest up to £12m in improvements to its site at Stafford Park. Operational response will continue to be provided from the site. There is some flexibility around the provision of training in terms of time and location.
‘The Authority now wishes to appoint a support team to the project manager to carry out the technical functions required to progress the scheme. The support team contract is being directly tendered, evaluated, awarded, appointed and paid by the Authority, but following appointment the team will be managed by the project manager.’
Telford is a large new town of around 155,000 inhabitants, located 21 km east of Shrewsbury and named after the civil engineer Thomas Telford. Telford Central Fire Station opened in the Stafford Park industrial area in late 1980.
The latest project will upgrade the landmark building and create a new control centre for the Shropshire & Wrekin Fire and Rescue Authority which is currently headquartered in nearby Shrewsbury.
The deadline for applications is 12noon on 19 October.
