Al Raeda Real Estate Development Company is recruiting architects for a major 8.2ha residential development in Sheikh Zayed City, Egypt

Open to architects worldwide, the competition seeks proposals for a new residential neighbourhood featuring a mix of apartments, duplexes, penthouses and stand-alone villas along with a school and shopping mall.

The project will transform an undeveloped, hilltop plot within the planned Sheikh Zayed City development on the outskirts of Cairo, around 20km from the Pyramids of Giza. The overall winner will receive a $10,000 prize plus the design contract.

According to the brief: ‘Al Raeda Developments is organising an architectural competition for designing a residential complex at Sheikh Zayed City, Giza, Egypt. The participants of the competition must be affiliated to the consultant’s architects for at least five years.

‘The location of the project is Sheikh Zayed City, Giza, Egypt, Plot No. 22, El Mehwar El Markazi, El Sheikh Zayed. Participants must take into consideration in designing the difference in the land level as the land is located in the summit of the city.’

Sheikh Zayed City is a suburb of Egypt’s ‘6th of October City’ settlement which was founded by former Egyptian president Anwar El Sadat in 1979 and has a population of half a million, expected to eventually rise to 3.7 million.

Weston Williamson + Partners won an international competition, organised by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, for a new 125,000m² Science City within the 6th of October City two years ago. The campus 35km west of Cairo will feature an exhibition hall, museum, conference centre, research hub, planetarium, observation tower and outdoor park.

The Sheikh Zayed City development was established in 1995 and is named after the founder of UAE, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The hilltop settlement features more than 20 residential neighbourhoods along with several schools and universities.

The latest competition focuses on an undeveloped 8.2ha plot in the north of the city bounded by a mosque and existing residential districts. The project will deliver a new sustainable residential development featuring a mix of housing types with views over the surrounding landscape.

The deadline for applications is 5pm local time on 30 June.
