Sheikh Zayed City is a suburb of Egypt’s ‘6th of October City’ settlement which was founded by former Egyptian president Anwar El Sadat in 1979 and has a population of half a million, expected to eventually rise to 3.7 million.
Weston Williamson + Partners won an international competition, organised by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, for a new 125,000m² Science City within the 6th of October City two years ago. The campus 35km west of Cairo will feature an exhibition hall, museum, conference centre, research hub, planetarium, observation tower and outdoor park.
The Sheikh Zayed City development was established in 1995 and is named after the founder of UAE, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The hilltop settlement features more than 20 residential neighbourhoods along with several schools and universities.
The latest competition focuses on an undeveloped 8.2ha plot in the north of the city bounded by a mosque and existing residential districts. The project will deliver a new sustainable residential development featuring a mix of housing types with views over the surrounding landscape.
The deadline for applications is 5pm local time on 30 June.
