Powys Dance is recruiting an architect for an upgrade of its historic base in Llandrindod Wells, Wales

The team chosen for the £14,500 contract will draw up a feasibility study exploring overhaul options for the company’s headquarters inside a former church hall known as the Powys Dance Centre. A consultant is also sought for a business feasibility report.

The project, supported by the Arts Council of Wales, aims to improve the building’s accessibility and efficiency while delivering a high-quality dance studio for classes, workshops and performances; a community area; a venue for meetings, conferences and additional income-generating activities; and rentable office space.

According to the brief: ‘The study … will have two elements: an architectural study; and a business plan study. The company requires that the two separate pieces of consultancy are conducted in close liaison to provide holistic development options for the building.

‘The study will provide Powys Dance with a comprehensive scheme as the basis for funding applications. The appointed design team will review current facilities and prepare a detailed design feasibility study for the development of the building to RIBA Plan of Work 0-2. The business consultant/team will provide a detailed business plan and identify new income streams and a fundraising strategy for the capital scheme.’

Llandrindod was established as a spa town which grew rapidly during the 18th and 19th centuries and is today the fifth largest town in Powys and home to Powys County Council.

Powys Dance has occupied a former church hall in the heart of the town for the past 35 years, promoting dance among a wide range of people and supporting the development of professional dance programmes.

The latest project aims to expand the organisation’s reach and capacity by enhancing its headquarters and improving the building’s overall sustainability. Key aims include delivering an expanded foyer with bar, box office and lift; creating new car parking and refreshing the exterior of the venue.

The deadline for applications is midday, 16 February.
