The University of Edinburgh is looking for an architect for a £15 million overhaul of its Peffermill Playing Fields

The winning team will remasterplan and upgrade the 11ha sports complex, which is home to Scotland’s National Hockey Academy (pictured) and is located in the shadow of Arthur’s Seat around 4km from Edinburgh city centre.

The phased project will deliver a new sports pavilion and indoor sports hall along with a flood prevention wall, artificial 3G sports pitches, an archery range centre and a trim trail.

According to the brief: ‘Demand for outdoor sport provision at University of Edinburgh is exceeding capacity.

‘The project will aim to provide increased playing capacity and changing facilities at Peffermill Playing Fields complete with consolidating the site for operational gains. Peffermill Playing Fields needs to remain operational and on outline scope of works delivered over a series of phases.’

The suburban 110,000m2 site currently features two changing pavilions alongside a pair of floodlit synthetic pitches and natural grass playing facilities for football, rugby, lacrosse, cricket and shinty. The site also features a nine-lane 100m sprint track as well as conference facilities.

The scheme will replace the existing McArthur Pavilion and Laurie Liddell Pavilion with a centrally located facility featuring an indoor sports hall alongside a gym, changing areas and common rooms.

The design contract is the latest to be announced by the university which recently began procuring an architect for a £1.5 million overhaul of 7-8 Chambers Street and a pair of masterplanners for the residential redevelopment of two greenfield sites in nearby Roslin.
