The Northern Regional College (NRC) is recruiting a design team for a major £52.5 million upgrade of its Coleraine and Ballymena campuses in Northern Ireland

The winner of the £2.25 million contract will advance plans for a new 17,227m² building on the third-level educational institution’s Ballymena site and a 11,649m² complex at its base in Coleraine (pictured).

Planned to complete in 2022, the £52.5 million project will consolidate NRC’s existing teaching facilities in the surrounding areas on the two sites and deliver new BREEAM Excellent accommodation for staff, students and the public along with new hard and soft landscaping.

According to the brief: ‘NRC wishes to appoint a single economic operator to provide the services of an integrated consultancy team (ICT) with project management, architecture, cost management, engineering and other associated construction professionals in related disciplines, who will develop an exemplar design to RIBA Plan of Work Stage 3 and acquire full planning permission for each campus.

‘The ICT will manage the procurement of an integrated supply team (IST) for each campus and administer the IST contracts until the end of the defects period.’

NRC formed in 2007 following the merger of Northern Ireland’s Causeway, East Antrim and North East Institutes. The college is spread across six campuses in Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine, Larne, Magherafelt and Newtownabbey, and focuses on a wide range of courses including engineering, information technology, construction, sports and leisure, and  social sciences.

The latest project will focus on the NRC’s Ballymena and Coleraine campuses, and will aim to boost the student experience, increase the quality of accommodation and enhance environmental sustainability.

The £29.5 million Ballymena scheme will deliver a new 17,227m2 campus on the college’s Farm Lodge site, which is a short distance from the Ecos environmental centre. The new campus will feature 12 flexible teaching rooms alongside machine areas, workshops, laboratories and a sports hall.

The £23.15 Coleraine scheme, meanwhile, will create a ‘high-quality and imaginative’ 11,649m2 campus on the college’s Union Street site. The facility will feature classrooms, sports studios, workshops and laboratories alongside a boardroom, canteen, offices, library, social area, study spaces and car and cycle parking.

Located a short distance from Coleraine town hall, the 7,274m2 campus currently features a 1930s two-storey structure alongside a 1950s extension, a 1960s tower, a playing field and a 40-capacity car park.

The deadline for applications is 3pm, 26 May.
