The Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) is recruiting architects for a £3 million framework covering a range of projects across the country over the next four years

The contract is divided into two separate lots with the first covering £1.6 million of upgrades at Belfast’s Maghaberry Prison and Prisoner Assessment Unit, and the second involving a £1.4 million modernisation of the Magilligan Prison (pictured), Hydebank Wood College and Women’s Prison, and the NIPS headquarters.

Teams chosen for the two lots may also be called on to design various additional projects – ranging from £500,000 to £5 million in value – across Counties Antrim, Down, Armagh, Londonderry, Fermanagh and Tyrone.

According to the brief: ‘The Northern Ireland Prison Service estate incorporates three operational establishments, in addition to a prisoner assessment unit and a headquarters building. An in-house estates team manages the operation of the estate function.

‘The Integrated Design Team will work with the in-house estates team to primarily deliver NIPS works projects, but will also provide occasional contract administration support for multi-disciplinary facilities management contracts. Due to the anticipated volume and frequency of work, two regional single operator professional design team services frameworks are to be established to take forward the delivery of multiple minor works and maintenance projects.’

The 900-capacity Maghaberry Prison hosts male category A–D prisoners while the Prisoner Assessment Unit provides overnight and weekend accommodation for up to 25 prisoners working in the community and nearing the end of their sentences.

Magilligan Prison holds 560 male prisoners while Hydebank Wood is a campus for 335 young offenders and women. The NIPS headquarters is a leased office space within the Stormont estate in Belfast.

Participating teams must feature a project manager, architect, quantity surveyor, building services engineer, structural engineer, environmental engineer, civil engineer and principal designer.

The deadline for applications is 3pm on 13 October.
