Forest Heath District Council is looking for a design team for a major new cinema in Newmarket, Suffolk
The winner of the estimated £50,000 contract will complete a series of feasibility studies exploring the potential for a cinema with supporting restaurants and bars at three possible sites within the historic town.
The project will identify the best possible location for the new facility, which is part of plans to boost Newmarket’s daytime and evening economy. Developed to RIBA Stage 2, the studies will consider access, visibility, cost, supporting retail and car parking at each of the key locations.
In its brief, the council says it is ‘looking to commission consultants to undertake site feasibility studies and prepare outline plans for the delivery of a cinema in Newmarket.
‘Following a study commissioned by the council earlier this year, it has been established that a cinema in Newmarket can be a viable proposition from an operator perspective, and the council is seeking to determine the optimum site for such a development in the town.’
Newmarket is widely considered to be the birthplace and global centre of horse racing. It features two racecourses and is home to several equine hospitals, auctioneers and more than 3,500 racehorses. The town is also aiming to become a UNESCO world heritage site.
The latest project aims to attract a wider range of visitors including families and younger people.
The winning team will investigate three publicly owned town-centre sites and evaluate the respective merits of each location. Concept designs to RIBA Stage 2 will also be required.
The deadline for applications is 10am, 3 October.
