An international contest has been announced for a landmark new 35-storey tower in Kolkata, India
Open to collaborative teams led by an Indian architect – the competition seeks conceptual proposals for a 140 metre-tall mixed-use tower to be constructed in the emerging Kolkata New Town district on the north east outskirts of the West Bengal capital.
The 93,000m² project, backed by the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation, will form the centrepiece of a new 32 hectare fintech hub located in Kolkata New Town central business district. Earmarked for a 1.6 hectare plot – the tower will feature around 300 apartments, 870 parking spaces, retail and offices.
According to the brief: ‘The West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation now invites expressions of interest from nationally and internationally reputed architects, architectural firms and agencies for submitting architectural design concepts of the iconic tower.
‘It would be a single high-rise iconic tower (at least 30 storied plus high or maximum height allowed by Airports Authority of India). Other building parameters would be as per the existing building rules of the New Town Kolkata Development Authority. The building would include all the utilities and facilities required for such iconic tower. 51 per cent of the total available space is to be used for commercial and maximum 49 per cent for residential purposes.’
Kolkata – formerly know as Calcutta – is India’s third most populous city and home to the country’s oldest riverine port. The sprawling settlement, located on the banks of the Hooghly River, is East India’s principle commercial, cultural and educational hub.
Kolkata New Town is a planned extension of the city located on former marshland on Kolkata’s north eastern fringes. Established in the 1990s, the new town has a planned population of one million residents.
The latest 35-storey tower project is part of a new 32 hectare fintech hub being constructed within the development. The client aims to deliver a new ‘architectural marvel’ with ‘world class facilities’ towering over the surrounding buildings.
The completed structure is expected to be environmentally friendly and with around a quarter of its internal spaces dedicated to innovative fintech businesses. Submissions should include conceptual proposals for the new skyscraper along with a financial bid.
The deadline for applications is 4pm local time on 5 March.
