The South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) is seeking an architect to restore a disused farmstead outside Midhurst, West Sussex

The winner of the £35,000-to-£50,000 contract will transform the dilapidated Heath Barn Farm complex into a new ‘exemplar’ base for the Wealden Heath Rangers who support local land managers and communities across the western end of the national park.

The project will ‘sympathetically convert’ the Petersfield Road farmhouse into a headquarters for the rangers, featuring offices, a meeting room, storage space and a separate area for local volunteers. The project follows the completion of a new £2.9 million South Downs Centre by Mackellar Schwerdt Architects five years ago.

According to the brief: ‘SDNPA will acquire the currently unoccupied area of Heath Barn Farm on a long lease from National Trust. The site is currently unoccupied apart from one storage unit which will become available to SDNPA in the near future which will need to be included in the design. The condition of the existing buildings is varied and are currently not fit for the purpose we intend.

‘It is our aspiration to sympathetically convert the historic farmstead into a high-quality area office mirroring the standard of our head office The South Downs Centre, Midhurst (SDC). It is essential this process is undertaken with full regard to sensitivities of the site, the historic context and the protected landscape it sits within.’

Established in 2011, the South Downs National Park covers 1,627km² stretching from Winchester in the west to Eastbourne in the east. The park hosts the historic South Downs Way and is managed by a network of rangers spread across different locations.

The latest project will create a base for the Wealden Heath Rangers in a disused farmstead just outside Midhurst. The scheme aims to replicate the success of the nearby South Downs Centre which saw two Grade II-listed buildings converted into a new visitor destination.

The winning team will provide the ‘required plans for the necessary consents, the contractor tender process and then the construction phase.’ Bids will be evaluated 70 per cent on quality and 30 per cent on cost.

The deadline for applications is midday, 17 December.
