Portsmouth Water is looking for a design team for a new £106 million reservoir north of Havant, Hampshire

The team chosen for the estimated £14 million contract will deliver a new 160ha reservoir to hold 8,700 million litres of water drawn from the Havant and Bedhampton Springs, which are prolific during the winter but yield less during the summer.

The Havant Thicket Winter Storage Reservoir project will also create new walking routes, recreational facilities, viewpoints and a visitor centre. The two runner-up teams will enter into a framework for smaller commissions expected to be worth up to £3 million in fees.

In its brief, Portsmouth Water says: ‘This represents a flagship project to design the first new strategic water resource in the South East for decades. Construction work is anticipated to start on the winter storage reservoir at Havant Thicket in 2024, for completion by 2029.

‘The project is socially, economically and environmentally significant and valued at £106 million. It is the product of collaborative regional water planning and forms a key step in increasing water resilience in the South East.’

Havant is a large town located in the south-east corner of Hampshire and home to around 125,000 people. The reservoir site, on the town’s northern edge, has been owned by Portsmouth Water since the 1960s.

The latest project will transform the large open area into a new reservoir to store local spring water during the winter which would otherwise be surplus to demand and drained into the sea. The scheme aims to capture additional water during the winter, which can be used to meet growing demand within the South East region during the summer.

The winning team will be required to deliver a range of services including architectural and engineering design, an environmental impact assessment, health and safety consultancy, site investigations and planning consultancy.

The deadline for applications is midday,12 September.
