Competition: Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh

The Fruitmarket Gallery is recruiting an architect for a £2.4 million expansion of its central Edinburgh home

The winning architect-led multidisciplinary design team will refurbish the landmark arts venue next to Edinburgh Waverley Station and create an extension occupying a neighbouring warehouse building.

The project, planned to complete in 2020, comes 25 years after local practice Richard Murphy Architects completed a comprehensive remodelling of the historic Market Street structure, originally built as a fruit and vegetable market in the late 1930s.

In its brief, the gallery says: ‘For 40 years The Fruitmarket Gallery has been a key part of Scotland’s cultural landscape, showing world-class modern and contemporary art to ever-increasing audiences.

‘It has identified that this success, however, is limited by its current building, which was last invested in over 20 years ago.

‘It now falls below the standards expected for the presentation and interpretation of world-class art; access for diverse audiences and current environmental aspirations. In addition, the adjacent warehouse building has become available, providing the opportunity for expansion and improvement. Now the Fruitmarket is at a turning point, with a light-touch, smart, financially viable strategy to both refurbish the existing venue and extend into the neighbouring warehouse building.’

The gallery was founded in 1974 and exhibits work by contemporary international and Scottish artists. The complex also features a popular bookshop and café.

The latest project will upgrade the existing gallery and create a 200m² arts space within a neighbouring warehouse building. A new library, workshop, education space, art handling area and storage room will also be delivered.

Reaich & Hall Architects has already completed a feasibility study for the scheme. The team chosen for the latest contract, to be announced in October, will deliver the project from RIBA Stage 3 through to completion.

The deadline for applications is midday, 17 September.
