Habinteg Housing Association Ulster has launched a design contest for a major new residential development in Strabane, Northern Ireland

The winning team will draw up plans for 162 new homes on the site of the former Adria hosiery factory which closed in 2004 and has now been completely cleared for redevelopment.

The project will deliver a mix of social, affordable and market rent homes on the 4.5-hectare suburban plot overlooking the River Foyle. A feasibility report has already been completed by Turley.

According to the brief: ‘The aim and expectations of Habinteg Housing Association Ulster in all of its developments is to ensure that a high standard of construction is maintained throughout and specifications are standardised using highest quality materials and workmanship standards.

‘Generally, the structural integrity of the buildings shall be designed to have a minimum of sixty years life. Buildings shall be designed using low maintenance components and provide a ‘home for life’ for tenants regardless of change in circumstances. Consideration should be given to future ease of maintenance with special regard for servicing and cleaning of all elements.’

Strabane is a historic town located on the eastern bank of the River Foyle in Tyrone around 20km southwest of Derry-Londonderry. Founded in 1976, Habinteg Housing Association Ulster manages more than 2,000 residential units in 100 locations across Northern Ireland.

The latest project focusses on the 4.5-hectare former Adria factory which ceased production in 2014. The scheme will deliver 162 new homes across three phases. The development may also feature commercial units for local start-up companies, a renewable energy facility, a creche, play parks and additional green areas.

Bids to take the scheme forward will be evaluated 60 per cent on quality and 40 per cent on cost. The deadline for applications is 12noon on 18 January.
