Åfjord municipality has launched an international competition to design a multipurpose activity centre in rural Norway
The winning team will deliver a new combined community and leisure centre for the rural communities of Åfjord and neighbouring Ørland.
The facility will feature a six-lane swimming pool with water slide, hot water pool, dry sauna, outdoor pool and showering areas. A library, volunteering centre, dining room, cultural centre, 250-capacity auditorium, workshops, classrooms, offices and a 70-seat cinema will also be included along with a GP’s office.
According to the brief: ‘The project’s vision is “A building for people with life”. The client wants the house to become a meeting place without necessarily being commercial interests that draw.
‘Other key words are an everyday house and activity house, not built on sports premises, but a place for learning, play, wellness and socialising.’
Åfjord is a 956km² rural municipality in the Sør-Trøndelag county of Norway. The area is home to 3,220 people and is centred on the village of Årnes (pictured) around 60km north of Trondheim.
Successful participants in the competition’s design phase will receive around £25,000 each and the winner will receive the design commission.
The deadline for applications is noon, 23 August.
