Radius Homes has launched a contest to design up to 50 social homes on the site of the former Ebrington Primary School in Derry-Londonderry
The competition, open to architects eligible to practise in the UK, seeks innovative, high-quality and contextual proposals for 50 new dwellings on a 1.26ha area of land formerly used by the school, which recently moved to a new £27 million complex by Isherwood & Ellis – a landmark new integrated premises alongside Foyle College and Ebrington nursery on the site of the former Clooney Army Base.
The £4 million-to-£5 million project will deliver a mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom and four-bedroom units on the prominent site located a short distance from the former Ebrington Barracks, which is being transformed into a maritime museum by Todd Architects.
In its brief, Radius Homes says the design contest ‘seeks a housing development that will provide high-quality homes for families and individuals in Ebrington and which will integrate fully with the surrounding area with a view on the future use of the overall site that will potentially be education or sports based.
’The design contest should create an innovative, high quality housing offer that reflects the unique characteristics of the subject lands and their surroundings, while also encompassing our vision of challenging the perception of social housing design and delivery.’
Judges include Radius Homes senior development officer Karen Treharne; Radius Homes director of development Anita Conway; Sam McKee, associate director at Turley Associates; and Radius Homes procurement manager Paul Murtagh.
An overall winner will be announced on 5 October. The deadline for applications is midday, 25 September.
