The Union of Architects of Russia has announced an open international contest for innovative new school and pre-school designs
Open to architects, designers, and investors, the competition seeks proposals for new kindergartens and schools that could be quickly and easily constructed throughout Russia using advanced construction techniques. Submissions may include both realised and unrealised concepts and will feature in a major exhibition in Moscow.
The Build School 2018 call for entries, supported by the Union of Moscow Architects, aims to identify a range of exemplar projects which could be harnessed by the Russian government as it moves forward with ambitious £35 billion plans to renovate the country’s entire schools estate by 2025.
According to the brief: ‘Build School brings together leading industry professionals and companies in the fields of design, construction, reconstruction, modernisation and operation of kindergartens and schools buildings. The subject of the exhibition covers all areas of design, construction, and equipment of kindergartens and schools.’
The Russian Federation contains around 46,000 kindergartens and 59,000 schools. The total number of both has fallen since the collapse of the Soviet Union nearly 30 years ago.
Build School 2018 is the Union of Architects of Russia and Union of Moscow Architects’ second competition focusing on school design. The inaugural Build School contest was held last year and received entries from Russia, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain and Latvia.
Schemes will be judged on their space planning, interior design, details, energy-efficiency and landscaping.
Proposals are sought for all types of facilities including schools specialising in sport, music, art and those providing for children with special needs.
The competition languages are English and Russian. Submissions will feature in a major exhibition inside Moscow’s Expocentre from 25 to 27 September and the overall winners will receive awards.
The deadline for applications is 1 August
