Competition: Bradford crematoriums

Oakworth Crematorium

Bradford Metropolitan District Council is looking for a design team to deliver two new crematoriums and revamp a further facility

The winning team will first complete a feasibility study exploring five potential sites before designing and delivering two new facilities. The existing Oakworth Crematorium near Keighley will also be refurbished.

The £16 million project aims to upgrade crematoriums across the 370km2 district, which is home to more than 500,000 people but suffers from a lack of modern crematoriums. All three schemes will be expected to integrate green energy solutions such as rainwater harvesting and solar panels.

In its brief, the council says it has ‘identified the need for infrastructure investment to prevent potential service failure and also deliver improvements in service delivery to the public. The council wishes to engage a suitably qualified consultant team to facilitate delivery of its crematorium programme including the provision of specialist advice to inform its decision-making process.

‘The refurbishment of Oakworth crematorium will likely require extension of the existing crematory into an adjacent banking together with possible reworking of existing internal layouts excluding the service hall/chapel. It is intended to build the two new crematoriums on new sites to be selected from a current list of five, three of which are currently privately owned and used for agriculture whilst the other two are within parks and held in trust.’

The Bradford area currently hosts three crematoriums, all of which lack modern noxious gas abatement equipment and are operating several years beyond their stated working life. They are also cramped and have poor vehicle access.

The new crematoriums will feature parking for 100 and 150 vehicles respectively along with a landscaped setting with a grand drive and water feature. Each facility will also include a reception area, conference room, waiting room, offices, service hall and two cremators.

The Oakworth Crematorium will meanwhile be externally refurbished and equipped with two new cremators along with upgraded public toilets, and a new kitchen.

The deadline for applications is 2pm, 31 October.
