Bournemouth Borough Council is looking for an architect to design a £1 million revamp of the resort town’s waterfront conference venue
The winner of the estimated £50,000 contract will draw up concept plans and submit a planning application for a major overhaul of the Bournemouth International Centre, which often hosts the annual conferences of British political parties and trade unions.
The project, backed by building manager and social enterprise BH Live, will upgrade and enhance the landmark beachside venue which first opened 33 years ago. Key improvements include a new main entrance and the transformation of the underused Purbeck Lounge and Bar into a new standalone facility.
In its brief, the council says the improvements aim ‘to modernise and improve the existing appearance to meet customer expectations and to improve the facility generally to ensure it is a 21st-century conference and event facility.
‘Fee proposals are being sought for architectural and quantity surveying services up to RIBA stage 3, to preparation of a planning application. This will include setting the brief and completion of concept designs. All information, drawings, product details and specifications etc. relating to the design, whether included or not in the planning application is to be handed over to the council in order to be included in the specification for the works contract to follow.’
The Bournemouth International Centre opened in 1984 as a major venue for conferences, exhibitions, concerts and events. It is a short distance from the town’s pier and Pavilion Theatre
The complex includes a 4,100-capacity main hall, the circular Purbeck Hall, and a swimming pool. The venue has hosted concerts by Björk, Morrissey and Craig David.
The latest project will internally and externally reconfigure the main entrance at the northern end of the site to create a more ‘welcoming and attractive’ appearance. Internal connections between the venue and its neighbouring multistorey car park will meanwhile be improved.
Other planned improvements include transforming the Purbeck Lounge, Bar and external terrace into a potential standalone venue and integrating the complex into the town’s emerging Grand Garden Walk promenade.
The deadline for applications is 2pm on 16 February.
