The Arad Goch Centre is seeking an architect for a £118,000 revamp of its headquarters in Aberystwyth, Wales
The team chosen for the maximum £11,800 commission will deliver a major overhaul of the city centre arts venue, upgrading its main foyer and reception area while also making the exterior of the historic building more welcoming and attractive.
The project aims to increase the number of young people using the centre, which occupies a former chapel, while creating a more contemporary image for Arad Goch and boosting its potential revenue. Featherstone Young Architects has already completed a feasibility study for the scheme. An artist will be appointed to a separate £2,400 contract to work with the winning team.
According to the brief, ‘when the centre was developed 10 years ago, the inside of the building was altered substantially; however, the external face remained unchanged. In recent consultations, we have been told that the front of the building is unwelcoming – particularly to young people – and appears old-fashioned. It does not reflect the contemporary nature of the work and activities within the building; this needs to be altered.
‘Over the coming years we aim to increase the use made of the centre, especially by young people in events organised by Arad Goch and by attracting more young people to use the centre to organise their own events; in addition we aim to increase income by hiring out the centre’s spaces and resources to organisations, artistic institutions and other artists and commercial bodies.’
The £1.9 million centre was created by local practice JJT 10 years ago, and features a theatre, gallery, workshops, editing suites, rehearsal spaces, meeting rooms and an archive.
The latest project aims to upgrade the ‘old-fashioned’ exterior of the building by creating a new external intervention. An upgraded entrance foyer and reception space will also be delivered.
The redevelopment is expected to complete by March 2019 in time for the Wales International Festival of Performing Arts for Young Audiences which will be hosted in the centre.
The deadline for applications is 5 February.
