Caernarfon theatre seeks architect for £4m cinema expansion

  • Comment

The Galeri Creative Enterprise Centre in Caernarfon – also known as Galeri Caernarfon – is on the hunt for an architect for a new £4 million extension featuring two cinemas

First opened in 2005, the Richard Murphy Architects-designed £6.4 million Victoria Dock venue currently features a theatre, rehearsal places and studios.

Planned to complete in 2020, the latest project will extend the landmark structure and create two new cinemas, offices, catering facilities and box office support areas.

Explaining the project, Galeri chief executive Gwyn Roberts told News North Wales: ‘We have now reached a crossroads – where we physically cannot develop the artistic programme or bring in additional revenue from conferences and hires due to the high number of activities that we programme.’

He continued: ‘Running the cinema programme from within the theatre doesn’t allow us to program the films or develop the audience as we would like to – and that is why we are actively trying to extend the existing building which would house two dedicated cinema spaces.

‘This will enable us to show the latest films as they are released.’

The winner of the estimated £300,000 contract will initially draw up plans to RIBA Stage 4. Galeri Caernarfon will then procure sub-contractors to implement the developed design with support from the design team.

The deadline for requests to participate is 1pm on 18 August.
