Architect sought for Guildford Crematorium overhaul

  • Comment

Guildford Borough Council is on the hunt for an architect to regenerate its crematorium

Planned to complete in 2018, the £4.5 million project will either refurbish and extend the existing structure or completely rebuild it.

First opened in 1967, the crematorium occupies a 15 hectares site on New Pond Road which had previously been owned by the Braboeuf family since the mid-13th century.

The copper-roofed building has capacity for 100 people seated and an additional 100 standing.

According to the contract notice: ‘Following a fundamental service review in 2014, Guildford Borough Council has made a decision to either refurbish or rebuild Guildford Crematorium on its current site and develop a masterplan for the whole site to ensure the service is fit for purpose for the next 50 years.’

The winning architect-led multi-disciplinary team will receive a contract worth up to £350,000 to develop the project.

The deadline for applications is 4 March.
