Architect sought for £8.5m Cambridge university archive

  • Comment

The University of Cambridge is procuring an architect for a new £8.5 million storage and retrieval centre for its University Library

Planned for a business park outside Ely – the single-storey 4,800m² facility will feature a controlled environment; an electronic cataloguing and retrieval system; and a racking structure to provide maximum density of storage.

First opened in the fifteenth century, Cambridge’s University Library holds around 8 million items and receives around 100,000 new volumes every year.

The current building (pictured) – located on the western edge of the city – hosts a large number of books on open shelves and the new facility will only store ‘low-use’ items from the collections.

The winning team will develop plans to RIBA Stage 3 before being novated to a contractor.

The deadline for requests to participate is 12noon on 14 August.
