Barnfield College is recruiting an architect for its new 17,000m² campus in central Luton
The winning multidisciplinary design team will draw up plans for a new ‘specialist and innovative’ further education complex on Bute Street (pictured) in the centre of the Bedfordshire town.
Planned to complete in September 2020, the £70 million facility will replace the college’s existing 1960s New Bedford Road and Enterprise Way campuses which are being sold to fund the move.
According to the brief: ‘Due to the age and inflexibility of the buildings on the existing campuses, the college intends to dispose of the two existing campuses and build a new, modern and innovative campus at a newly acquired site in Bute Street in Luton town centre.
‘The new campus will: provide an efficient, flexible and modern learning environment for students; have high visual impact and contribute to the regeneration of Luton; be an educational hub and also be accessed by the community and public.’
The further education college, founded in 1968, provides a range of courses covering business, retail, art, technology, public services and sports.
The city centre move comes a year and a half after Ofsted rated Barnfield College ‘inadequate’ in all areas, and is part of strategy to restore outstanding teaching standards.
Up to five teams will be shortlisted for the £2.7 million design contract which covers RIBA stages 0 through to 7.
Architectural design, catering design, acoustic consultancy, fire consultancy, landscape design, principal designer, mechanical and electrical engineering design, structural engineering design, and fixtures, fittings and equipment consultancy services will all be required.
The deadline for applications is 12 noon on 26 September.
