Architect sought for £1.8m Irish horseracing HQ expansion

Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) is seeking an architect to expand its headquarters in Ballymany, County Kildare

Planned to complete in 2017, the £1.8 million project will create a series of extensions to the organisation’s 3,000m² headquarters overlooking The Curragh racecourse (pictured).

Designed by Todd Architects, the aluminium and limestone-clad £6.8 million landmark currently provides office space for around 120 staff.

The two-storey 2007 structure also features a café and a library with documents on the history of Irish racing open to the public.

The winner of the £300,000 contract will design three extensions to the building which no longer provides enough space for HRI’s growing staff.

According to the brief: ‘The purpose of the extension is to provide adequate space to cater for future growth of the current equine industry services building at Ballymany.

‘One of the extensions shall be stand alone to minimise impact on existing day to day operations during construction work and facilitate a stand-alone business unit on completion.

‘An assessment and potential reconfiguration of existing services (HVAC, BMS etc) will be carried out in conjunction with the new design or build to ensure the completed building performs to the highest energy efficiency standards possible. The other two extensions will be to the existing building.’

The new facilities are expected to be flexible, low maintenance, high quality, environmentally sustainable and deliver optimal value for money.

Offices, meeting rooms and canteen spaces within the existing structure will also require reconfiguration.

Set up fifteen years ago, HRI promotes Irish horseracing and breeding and is responsible for developing new racecourses, regulating bookmakers and awarding prize money.

The chosen architect led multi-disciplinary design team is expected to include a civil and structural engineer, mechanical and electrical consultant, quantity surveyor, project supervisor and fire safety consultant.

The deadline for applications is 12noon on 6 September.
