Architect needed for St John at Hackney Church revamp

  • Comment

The St John at Hackney Church in north London is on the lookout for an architect for a £1.8 million regeneration scheme

The project will refurbish the Grade II*-listed building – designed by James Spiller to replace a nearby medieval parish church in 1792 – and create a new community centre.

Describing the project, rector Rob Wickham said: ‘We have been shaping Hackney for almost 800 years- and our project is in keeping with our desire to see Hackney, in all its diversity, flourish, as it includes not only new housing, but also a refurbished Grade II*-listed icon building, and a new community centre which will focus on the educational and relational needs of the young.’

The winner of the £156,000 contract will initially draw up plans to RIBA Stage 3, assist with a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) application and complete a planning application.

According to the contract notice: ‘The delivery phase is dependent on achieving a successful second round heritage grant award and combined with securing funding from the HLF to coordinate and deliver the capital building works.

‘Therefore, St John at Hackney will be appointing initially for the development phase with an option to appoint for the delivery phase to complete the scheme. Tenderers will be required to split costs into these two phases.’

The deadline for requests to participate is 23 October.
