Southside Housing Association is recruiting an architect to restore a series of tenement buildings in the Strathbungo area of Glasgow, transforming bedsits into one-bedroom flats
The winning team will deliver a £400,000 programme of internal alterations and improvements to six buildings, reconfiguring existing layouts and introducing new bathrooms and kitchens. The buildings also require upgraded plumbing, heating, electrics and windows.
The properties are spread across Bowman Street, Chapman Street, Calder Street, Craigie Street and Allison Street.
According to the brief: ‘Architects are invited to submit a tender as a sole lead consultant together with a full design team providing all necessary architectural, engineering, quantity surveying and any other services deemed relevant for this project.
‘It is anticipated that you will be required to employ these services directly, and manage and co-ordinate as if they were being delivered by yourselves in-house.’
Strathbungo is on the major Pollokshaws Road thoroughfare (pictured) and next to Southside’s prestigious Queen’s Park. It was absorbed into Glasgow during the city’s rapid expansion in the late 19th century.
Today the area is characterised by a large number of coffee bars, restaurants, cafés and historic tenement buildings.
Nearby landmarks include the Category B-listed Tramway arts centre and Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson’s 1859 Moray Place terrace.
Bids will be assessed 60 per cent on quality and 40 per cent on cost. The deadline for applications is 12 noon on 12 October.
