Hamburg motorway land developments, Torquay school extensions and a Church of England chair design contest. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

Hamburg has launched an open ideas competition aimed at finding uses for land around and above the city’s proposed motorway network. Proposals are sought for park land and housing to occupy the land above the city’s soon to be laid Altona motorway tunnels.  Submissions must be received by 25 January 2012.

Torbay Council is on the hunt for architects to design multi-storey extensions to three of its primary schools. Two of the schools are within Torquay. One of these requires a single-storey four classroom block extension and the other needs a two-storey single classroom block with group areas. The final school in nearby Paignton requires a 240m² hall, school kitchen and a three classroom block with plant rooms. Request to participate must be received by 3 February 2012.

The Church of England has launched an open competition to find new seating designs for its 16,000 parish churches. The competition organisers are looking for designs which meet contemporary church needs but also complement the buildings’ historic interiors. Submissions must be received by 30 March 2012.
