From Cuba to Castleford: artist Carlos Garaicoa’s brings his public observatory designs to West Yorkshire

Internationally-acclaimed Cuban artist Carlos Garaicoa was invited by Arts Council England in 2005 to create a public artwork in Castleford. Within the remit, Garaicoa added that the project must tackle real issues and include the local residents; a stance also attempted by the participants in Kevin McCloud’s Big Town Plan (Channel 4, 2008).

With this in mind, the artist designed a multi-purpose Observatory - to be used as a meeting and learning environment for Castleford residents. The Observatory would contain an artwork that is an exact replica of Castleford at night and this pilot would lead to a carefully chosen library of 200 books on various subjects relating to Castleford’s proud history. The town’s highlights include a Roman settlement, birthplace of leading artist Henry Moore and mining town: rich pickings for learnings on art and history.
