What’s innovative is the way they managed to keep the ring beam very modest,’ says Hopkins Architects senior partner Mike Taylor.

‘Lots of these structures have enormous ring beams. This is teeny.’

This has been possible because the ring beam is part of a diagonally braced three-dimensional structure supporting the timber cladding and the roof.

Using rockers, the roof cables are connected to the inner members of the three-metre-wide ring beam which acts like the frame of a tennis racket.

A five-metre-wide zone of Sarnafil single-ply roofing negotiates the transition from the Kalzip roofing to the prefabricated gutters. Ribs in the Sarnafil at two-metre centres manage the flow of rainwater into the gutter.

The design of the gutter detail was particularly challenging. The geometry is curved in plan and section, and the roof forms an acute angle with the sloping cladding.

The prefabricated laminated timber assemblies that form the gutter were fitted over the ring beam before the timber cladding was installed.

Intensive design development was necessary to produce an elegant form and minimal gutter.
