tp bennett’s Slough building is first UK office to receive WELL certification

A focus on occupants’ wellbeing has seen the Porter Building become the first office in the UK to achieve WELL Building Gold Standard certification

Developed by Landid and Brockton Capital, the new building sits opposite Slough Station, where transport links to London are due to improve with the opening in 2019 of the Elizabeth Line.

The building provides five floors of flexible office space, a double-height reception with two public restaurants and a communal roof terrace, as well as a light-filled atrium designed to reduce stress and improve wellbeing.

The building also features 100 parking spaces with 10 electric vehicle charging points and 100 secure bicycle spaces, along with showers and lockers for the ever growing number of workers who like to ride or run to work.  

The project has achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’, and is the first office building in the UK to achieve the global WELL Building Standard, an international performance-based assessment which focuses on human health and wellbeing in the built environment.

Architect’s view

We are really pleased to have helped design and deliver the first commercial office building in the UK to achieve WELL Building Gold Standard certification. Staff wellbeing and productivity were at the heart of our concept and the most up to date research has informed our design at every stage, resulting in a high quality, flexible and cost-efficient workspace. Striving for the WELL certificate meant that the design was developed to maximise the wellbeing of occupiers, with abundant natural light, fresh air, specially filtrated drinking water, indoor planting, noise reduction measures and a layout aimed at encouraging movement around the workplace.

Directly opposite Slough Station, the site is in a prime location and very much a gateway to the town, so a building with a strong presence was important. The striking contemporary façade plays a key role in signalling the process of change and regeneration that is now happening in Slough, which is a growing hub of commercial activity. The materials where chosen to represent the best in contemporary office design, and also to reflect the history of the area, complementing the adjacent rail station and listed church.

  • Given the proportions of the upper floors fenestration, surely this building would have achieved much greater quality if the same pattern had been adopted consistently throughout, rather than stretching the lower windows down to pavement level (with spandrel panels and deepened reveals) at the base.
