Teatum + Teatum launches collaborative workspace in Sheffield

  • Comment

The 400m² Testone Factory is designed to be a new model of affordable workspace

Revitalising one of the city’s oldest industrial sites in Kelham Island, the flexible working concept is a collaboration between commercial strategists Noiascape, architect Teatum + Teatum and the client, design communications agency Peter & Paul, who will be based there.

Teatum + Teatum designed and structured the space to facilitate open collaboration and dialogue among tenants: with small, affordable units set around a larger shared central studio, which can be used for meetings, film screenings, readings, events or talks.

This central space is surrounded by two serviced wings and terraces which cantilever over the River Don. The west wing features a meeting room, kitchen and publicly accessible micro-gallery, where local artists can exhibit, while the east wing contains micro-office spaces, designed for creative professionals.

Architect’s view

The Testone Factory is a new typology that uses flexibility and collaboration to create growth, and allows new and established creative companies to create more by working together. It requires an openness to new working methods and spatial organisations for both small and big organisations. Importantly Testone connects with the city locally at street level and as an idea. It shows how regeneration at a local level can contribute and be a positive catalyst for change.

Client’s view

Our business and its developing culture is strongly rooted in our ability to create and build strong relationships with clients, suppliers and collaborators. The absolute need to be innovative relies firstly on us behaving, believing and feeling creative, and so our environment and location is crucial to this; that’s why we wanted to bring all this thinking into a new studio space. Investing in good design to solve a problem is what we encourage all of our clients to do, and we employ the same principles when buying, designing and developing our own space, and choosing to work with the teams from Noiascape and Teatum + Teatum.
