Stephen Lawrence Prize: House of Trace by Tsuruta Architects

  • Comment

Demolishing an original extension paved the way for this intervention, which sees the original house traced as a memory

PLANSSECTION • EXPLODED AXONOMETRIC • PROJECT DATA

The original south London end-of-terrace family home had no distinct historical or architectural value and was structurally unsound. But Tsuruta Architects has incorporated its memory into the facade of the new extension.

Contrasting brickwork marks where the existing building meets the new extension. The sloping roofline has been surrounded by pale-coloured brickwork distinguishing old and new. Steel beams used to support the new extension have been left exposed, with large sections of glazing set within this framework.

Internally, bare materials have been left visible, from brick and timber in living spaces to bare plaster in the children’s and second bedrooms.

The layout has been rearranged to move the bathroom and kitchen from the rear of the house to its centre, and a two-storey lightwell has been added to bring in light and connect the living spaces with the bedrooms above.
