Stephen Lawrence Prize: Exhibition Mews by Ash Sakula

  • Comment

This prototype housing scheme by Ash Sakula shows how exemplar sustainable housing could be built at scale

The practice won the job in 2012, having seen off competition from White Arkitekter, Bere Architects, Proctor Matthews and Letts Wheeler. It went on to build three homes that could be replicated on further sites across Hampshire.

The timber-framed, two-bedroom terraces were designed to be easy to build, insulate, heat and live in.

Each of the two-storey homes is accessed through a glass-roofed space, which can be used as a boot room, workshop, greenhouse, play space or porch.

The ground floor includes a living room, WC, dining room, and a kitchen which opens out onto the garden space.

According to the practice, the layout of the homes ‘focused on how people actually want to live’.
