'Timber: a material with almost limitless applications'

  • Comment

[AJS EDITORIAL] This month, AJ Specification focuses on timber, a material with almost limitless applications in architecture, ranging from external cladding to joinery

We also look at the structural use of timber and related products, including fixings and finishes.

The news section covers recent developments in product specification and includes a list of books received. There is also a preview of the Housing 2010 event, taking place next month in Harrogate.

Martin Spring introduces our product focus with a lively overview of timber specification. This is followed by three building studies that demonstrate a range of timber applications. Waingels College near Reading, by Sheppard Robson, is a Building Schools for the Future project built in cross-laminated panels and glulam. Rural Design’s holiday house at Fiscavaig on the Isle of Skye is also timber through and through. Berman Guedes Stretton’s Darwin Centre Historic Collection at London’s Natural History Museum uses laminated ash and stainless-steel cables to create a cocoon-like housing.

Next, Neil Barnett, resource cost service manager at the Building Cost Information Service of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, provides an up-to-date analysis of costs for timber, joinery and related products. Our subject for Product Anatomy is the TRADIS timber construction system, an interesting application of engineered timber. This is followed by a CPD on daylighting provided by The Rooflight Company, and our product directory, headed by timber products.
