Products: Gymnasium and Town Hall Esplanade

A selection of the products used in LAN’s Gymnasium and Town Hall Esplanade, France

Architect’s choices

The materials used were chosen both for their durability and strength as well their ability to express the design intent. The copper used in the facade, for
example, interprets and reconstructs the urban context through its fragmented and colourful reflection. The floor of the esplanade varies, depending on weather conditions. When dry, it forms a dense and solid matte color; when wet, it becomes bright, partly reflecting the surroundings.

Locker-room floor

Matt grey tiles 300 x 300mm, anti-slip, full body porcelain stoneware

The tiles on the locker-room floor have the same finish as the matt black concrete exterior.

Schüco. T-profile, 50 wide x 60 mm deep, full height

Finish: RAL black 9005 exterior, RAL grey 9007 interior

Visual continuity of the exterior was established through the thin and long steel mullions. When seen from the inside, they blend in with the composition of the gymnasium

Saint-Gobain. Double glazed unit, 66.2/16/66.2 Argon filled, with solar heat control, flexible joint connection

The windows provide enhanced environmental performance, connect with the urban environment and admit daylight

KME Tecu Classic. Non-treated, 2mm thick, bonded to wood panels.

Bottom: French opening, mounted on invisible hinge with locking system

Upper: fixed

The copper was chosen for its reflective and transformative qualities. It acts as a kaleidoscope, activating the viewer’s interpretation of the surrounding urban context. It is also mounted to wooden panels, which are ideal acoustic barriers

External walls

PSS Faceal colour basic black 100 matt, two layers

Stain applied by spraying on previously sanded rough concrete wall

The exterior walls are concrete with a Lazure admixture throughout, which enhances the aesthetic qualities of the material

Internal floor to halls and corridors

Surfaplan. Sanded finish, gloss gray

The interior halls and corridors are finished with a light glossy grey, creating an effect similar to polished concrete, but with a much lighter feel.

The result is a breathable and open space in contrast with the traditional vocabulary of the gym

Surfaplan with hammered finish of Surfanet

Two colours: black and Cor-ten-like finish

Following the theme of reflection, a finish with a similar colour to copper was used on selected blocks of Surfaplan. The finish of the irregularly placed material varies with the climate
