Narford Road Residential Development by Fraser Brown MacKenna Architects

  • Comment

Fraser Brown MacKenna Architects created this timber clad residential project on a landlocked site in Hackney

The architect’s view

We were appointed by One Housing Group to develop a landlocked, former light-industrial site in Hackney, London. The brief was to maximise the number of high-quality homes, providing not only affordable housing but also a care and support facility.

Our challenge was to deliver the requirements of the brief within the complex geometry of the site. The buildings range in height from one to four storeys and are orientated in such a way as to ensure they minimise impact on the surrounding homes. To prevent overlooking, a range of strategies has been used, including solar and privacy shading using timber screens and high level, carefully orientated windows.

The majority of the homes are clad in light brick and timber; providing a subtle and natural aesthetic that sits comfortably in the neighbourhood.
