Tiling gives college shimmering look

In its new building for Aquinas College in Stockport, which opens in September, architect Broadway Malyan worked with cladding specialist James & Taylor to develop a design which uses its Senses aluminium tiles with varying degrees of reflectivity to create a shimmering, engineered finish.

These had previously been used on the MediaCityUK project in Manchester and Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s Italian restaurant, in London’s Canary Wharf.

The new £40 million multifunctional building comprises classrooms, laboratories, a new theatre and chapel, staff offices and study areas. It uses rainwater recycling, natural lighting, and a ventilation system that reduces the need for conventional space heating.

Andrew Barstow, northern regional manager of James & Taylor said, ‘From initial concept through to execution, we have sought to utilise the Senses tiles so that their unique qualities are highlighted in all aspects of the design.’
