Droylsden Academy

Ryder Architecture

The architect’s view

This project is part of the £300M Tameside MBC Building Schools for the Future programme, for which Ryder has designed the two non sample schemes. Droylsden Academy is the amalgamation of two existing schools, Little Moss Boys School and Droylsden School for Girls. It was established in September 2009 and currently operates across two sites. The new academy is on a single site and will provide accommodation for 1,200 students aged 11 - 16 and a new 200 place sixth form. Tameside College is the sponsor. The design supports transformational learning and is organised in three main elements: a curved block, a linear block and a central hub. Simple timber built raised floors throughout the upper levels support transformational learning through flexible power and data provision to furniture and equipment which move to cater for a range of learning styles.
